"starting this coming sunday january 8th we begin our residency at zebulon in brooklyn. 3 consecutive sundays and three sets nightly beginning after 9 pm. acoustic / electric / beyond, in the good ol' abe order with the home comfort wing of the golden road in tow. all these zebulon shows are FREE. for this coming sunday we'll be joined by rongoose and smokehound along with special guest steve gunn sittin' in with us for the environmental "beyond" set. expect some other surprises as well.

on sunday the 15th "high lodge", which is my new project with jeremy "woods" earl, will handle the beyond set. we've been cuttin' wood in the shed for the past coupla years and we're ready to burn. expect an LP from that unit in future wave as well. special surprises that night will have good ol' jer doing triple duty (3 times the fun) sitting in on traps and various possessions for the acoustic/electric sets and herbcraft providing the low end theory. should be wild papers.

on sunday the 22nd our great, groovy old friend and tapenaut P.G. Six will provide a set of his own in the evening as well as sitting in with erika and I for some numbers. who knows what kinda transmissions from the sensual field that might bring.

As a companion piece to their new full length, Sun and Shade, this single was recorded in the winter of 2011 at Buttermilk Falls in Warwick, NY. Woods have gracefully risen to the top of their class by crafting intricate nostalgic, experimental pop songs that are unforgettable. The A-side, “Find Them Empty” is far less falsetto and way more Bob Trimble than any of their previous work. The B-side, “Be There” is a more jam-friendly number reminiscent of their legendary live shows. The cover of this single features a young Caleb Braaten (Sacred Bones), his father, and a gigantic marijuana plant. Enjoy!

Matt "MV" Valentine preps new LP for Woodsist

If string theory is correct, this is approximately the thirteenth album Matt Valentine has released that definitely shouldn’t be filed under a group name (Tower Recordings, Bummer Road, Golden Road, etc.). On the other hand, if string theory is correct, this might also be his 11,000th album. The truth, one suspects, is somewhere in between. Since bedding down in southern Vermont at the dawn of the century, MV has been as cussedly prolific as anyone. The gout of LPs, cassettes, CDRs, singles and 10-inches emerging from Maximum Arousal Farm has dwarfed the output of everyone ’cept maybe Sunburned or Thurston. Regardless, there can never be enough MV LPs in the world, and What I Became is a beaut. Most of it is as solo as Satan, apart from percussionist Jeremy Earl (of Woods fame), whose presence is sometimes felt more than heard. Erika “EE” Elder and Mike “Muskox” Smith also pop up on a track, but the general approach here is as naked-and-loaded as the soul of Icepick Slim. As usual, MV’s tunes and procedures beggar easy generification. Elements of deep forest psychedelia brush against Crazy Horse guitar / vocal flourishes that explode to reveal volk-based form mayhem at its hickiest. My particular fave here is “PK Dick,” a paean to nth dimensional logic in the form of a Swedish psych-folk readymade. My son prefers the haunted-Harvest-vibe (his words) of “ Ave. B.” My wife goes for the Seventh Sons approach offered by “Sweet Little Indian Girl” (always a fave with the ladies). And my daughter nods in the direction of “Continuing the Good Life” for reasons she will not explain. I suspect it’s the hooty vocals, reminding her of teen pop giants like The Shins and Of Montreal, but she ain’t sayin’. All this just goes to show that What I Became is a fun album for the whole family. It will soothe your savage breasts. It will turn your evil mother-in-law into a porpoise. It will wash yr dishes and darn yr socks. Darn them! Motherfucker, who else would do that? Nobody, Jack. ’Cept MV. This guy has the magic touch. And it has never been displayed better than here. Just get the fucking rec. Or prepare to go sockless. Kind of a no-brainer, eh? —Byron Coley

It's true--the sons and daughters of Homestead, Xpressway and first-wave Drag City (et al.) are now making good music. "Pennsylvania Power and Light Electric Utilities (PPL) and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) have requested a construction and right-of-way (ROW) permit from the National Park Service (NPS) for the expansion of an existing electric transmission line that crosses NPS lands within Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The project is based on direction for electric transmission expansion provided by the Regional Transmission Operator, PJM Interconnection, which oversees the overall movement of wholesale electricity between many electric utilities throughout a 13 state region. The proposed project, the Susquehanna (Berwick, PA) to Roseland (NJ) line, proposes to expand upon an existing ROW which contains a single 230,000 volt (230kV) electric transmission line by replacing the existing towers with new, taller tower structures and adding an additional 500,000 volt (500kV) transmission line. The request would necessitate widening the existing ROW and constructing new access roads. The expanded line and new towers will impact three units of the National Park Service: the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DEWA); the Middle Delaware National Scenic and Recreational River and National Recreation Water Trail; and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail (AT). The NPS is preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate the permit request."- NPS

"More carnage from Eat Skull this week taking the form of a Woodsist 7" single. A-side 'Jerusalem Mall' is a twisted take on a pre-punk Stooges-esque vision of rock as a possessed and dangerous entity. The fairly formulaic rock groove is bastardized by crazed guitar soloing throughout and makes for a delightfully noisy listen. B-side 'Don't leave me on the speaker' sees the group embracing a shadows-esque structure whilst ramping up the reverb and the saturated guitar solos and final track 'Thank You! Smokebreaks' sounds a little like Thee Oh Sees for a bit before descending into an inexplicable mess of drums, guitars and shouty shouts. With all the info helpfully carved into the leg of a man on the back cover, you'll find this single both clear, informative and easy to navigate....don't forget about the dead kid on the cover....lovely."-Norman Records

San Francisco’s Moon Duo was formed in 2009 by Sanae Yamada and Erik Johnson(Wooden Shjips). Inspired initially by the legendary duo of John Coltrane and Rashied Ali, Moon Duo counts such variant groups as Silver Apples, Royal Trux, Moolah, Suicide, andCluster as touchstones. Utilizing primarily guitar, keyboards, percussion and vocals, the duo plays space against form to create a primordial and disorienting sonic stew. The group released two acclaimed records in 2009: the debut 12″ single, Love on the Sea, on Sick Thirst, and the Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones. Their follow-up long-player, Escape, on Woodsist, marks the fullest realization yet of the young group’s evolving sound.
